1. Following are Director of Education's replies to the comments
made by the non-African Sub-Committee of the A. C. E. C. Begins.
Part 1. Section 19.
The proportion of 14 teachers to 10 classes is not considered to be unduly high for the following reasons:-
(a) the standard of written English being what it is, the time involved in correction when most subjects are taught in English is very much greater than would be the case in England;

teachers of Chinese language and literature cannot be used for any other purpose;
(c) it is necessary for the staff to become its own pool of "supply teachers" in case of illness;
(a) sports activities involve considerable travel and are super- ised by the ordinary staff;
(e) climatic conditions;
the employment of part-time teachers is not encouraged but is frequently necessary where the full time staff have not the Tequisite qualifications.
The schools have 41 periods per week, not 35, viz: 8 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 5 on Wednesday and 4 on Saturday.
Section 34.
Sections 1 and 5 of the Introduction partly cover this point. is suggested that the following be added to this Section:
